Stokke Tripp Trapp vs Fornel: Which Wooden High Chair Is Actually Worth It?

If you have been researching adjustable wooden high chairs, you have almost certainly come across two names: the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Fornel wooden high chair. Both are wooden, grow-with-your-child chairs with an adjustable seat and footrest. Here is how they compare on the things you can check for yourself.

Both brands sell a separate baby set so younger babies can use the chair. Fornel's Baby Set (backrest, safety bar and tray, for 6–36 months) is $49, or $179 together with the chair.

Material

The Tripp Trapp is made from beech wood. The Fornel is made from multi-layer birch plywood: thin birch layers bonded and bent for strength, which keeps the parts stable and resistant to splitting.

Adjustment and age range

Both chairs let you move the seat and footrest as your child grows, so feet stay supported and the table stays at a comfortable height. The Fornel chair on its own is for ages 3 and up and is rated up to 200 lb, so it keeps working as a youth and grown-up chair. With the Fornel Baby Set it can be used from 6 months, once your baby can sit up unassisted.

Fornel's seat and footrest are held by the side panels, so the bolts need to be fully tightened with the included Allen key, and re-tightened after the first two weeks and whenever you change a height.

Safety certification

The Fornel chair is certified to ASTM F404, the US high chair safety standard, with a Children's Product Certificate.

Colors

Fornel comes in six finishes: Natural, Walnut, Dark Walnut, Grey, Black and White.

Which should you buy?
